Blaine Hunt – Revelling in Rebellion

Blaine Hunt

Have you ever wondered how many medjoul dates an elite para-cyclist needs to complete a 2-hour track session? If your answer is yes then we have the inside scoop. Read on to find out what happened when Breakaway Digital met Blaine Hunt aka CC Outcast.

As the name suggests, at Breakaway Digital we are always rooting for riders who decide to take on the almost impossible task of evading the almighty, powerful and controlling peloton. Inspired by those sort of brave attacks where a rider will empty themselves with the slimmest chance of making it stick to the line. We think being bold, brave and boisterous on and off the bike is a good thing.

With this in mind we thought who better to pay a visit to than Blaine Hunt. Para-cycling World Championship silver medalist on the track, vegan and proud owner of the most exuberant moustache the cycling world has ever seen. Maybe.

A man who keeps his cards close to his chest, like the coveted perfect number of dates for a track session, Blaine is hunting for gold at the World Championships. He wants to be the best in the world, and he won’t stop until he gets there.

It seemed typical that we had picked the only sunny day in the whole of June for our visit to the velodrome. Nevertheless, we were excited to shadow Blaine for the day. Quite literally in some cases considering his fine facial hair and colossal legs!

Once trackside he got to work prepping for the session. We chatted away as he swiftly set up a mobile bike shop in the track centre. Bags of bits and bobs unfurled themselves on the floor. A new chainring slotted onto the cranks and those all important dates were rested onto a nearby chair.

As well as all the tools, spare chain, two phones and air density sensor were his trusty socks. Not the ones he was wearing, instead two pairs that carefully adorn his handlebars. Thickly knit and neatly spotted socks are apparently the perfect protection for a carbon handlebar that has flown all the way from Australia.

When asked what was on the menu today Blaine turned to us and said ‘The breakthrough session’. We were left quivering in our boots by the sound of it, and were secretly quite relieved that we had a camera to play with instead of our Vo2 Max training zone. Without giving too much away he told us it is one of his harder sessions. Repeated sustained maximal efforts with very little recovery.

All in all a monster sounding session aimed at working very specific systems within the body that we had never heard of.

Besides monitoring the date situation carefully we learnt of the trials and tribulations faced by an athlete who is balancing a full-time job, his own business and an intense training schedule.

Paying close attention to every detail within his reach Blaine is confident he has what it takes and the right team around him to prove he is the best in the world.

What we couldn’t get out heads round was his level of independence. Whether this is by choice or more likely his status as an outcast, he does everything himself. A one-man team who clearly knows what he is doing. From coach to home mechanic to agent to athlete. There is nothing Blaine won’t learn or try out in his pursuit for speed and international cycling dominance.

After snapping away for a couple of hours Blaine was finished. He walked off to the locker and we bid our farewells.

We left the velodrome feeling inspired. Inspired by the moustache. Inspired by the man behind the moustache. Blaine told us that no-one knows how to push themselves harder than him. If the combination of determination and talent that he clearly possesses isn’t enough to secure gold at the track world champs then we don’t know what is!

Breakaway Digital would like to serve Blaine Hunt a massive ‘chapeau!’ and a side of ‘Bon courage!’

You didn’t think I would leave you in the lurch about the date conundrum did you?

Fear not, he ate three, and in the words of Blaine, ”eat real food, ride real fast”.
